How a little bit of thoughtfulness helped get Paul into a job
Back in spring 2020 North Wales Training came into socially distanced contact with Paul. He’d been out of work and was at a low ebb and needed help to pick himself up. This is something our Adult Engagement Team pride themselves in and they promptly recommended he try Groundwork’s ‘Flintshire Fellas’ project.
The Fellas offered Paul the opportunity to join other unemployed and retired men like him to learn new skills, practice old ones and give something useful back to the community. With activities including restoring furniture and creating small wooden craft pieces such as bird boxes for resale Paul started feeling restored too.
And that would have been that but for the Covid-19 pandemic rudely stopping the project in its tracks. “When Lockdown happened and the Flintshire Fellas had to be put on hold I found myself back at home missing the workshops and the friendly environment the project offered” Paul told Groundwork.
So Paul returned to us in August. And much as we were glad to see him we were gutted for him. Happily Pauline Quinn one of our placement officers displayed the kind of thoughtfulness the team at North Wales Training is known for. Pauline asked if he’d be interested in doing some volunteer work at Refurbs. Another project run by Groundwork is Refurbs. They lovingly @refurbish old household appliances and furniture and offers them to people on low incomes at prices they can afford. Paul was only too happy to take the offer up.
“I of course took their offer right away and told them I’d be more than happy to help out!” Paul is reported to have said.
Paul mucked right in, cleaning donated items, assisting customers, and helping on stock check and display placement in the Refurbs store. Before long a position came available as a stock prep technician. And having shown what a great candidate he was the role was offered to him. We hear he hasn’t looked back.
At North Wales Training we like happy endings. Especially ones which lead to unemployed people like Paul going from volunteer to paid employee. All thanks to a little thoughtfulness on the part of one of our team. But this isn’t a one-off. We’ve many stories such as this (we just thought you’d like to know).
